Life is a highway

Wow, it's been so long since I updated and I just have so much to say I don't know where or how to start.
Let me give it a shot.
So as my faithful fans (:P) probably know, I am in the Yoonited States on a semester abroad program and living alone for the first time. Firstly, can I just say how awesome it is to live alone???
Because it totally is.
You don't really grow as a person until you have to make it on your own. And boy, these past few months feel like they've been the most important of the 242 months of my life.

I have experienced-
The true form of education- through application and thinking for yourself.
(Although, I still fall asleep in class.)

I have discovered-
Mexican food and Japanese chicken teriyaki ;)
(I still can't stand most healthy food so this is probably not reeeally a good thing)

I have learned-
Not to be so judgmental and to just 'chill out'
(read as-not working hard but convincing myself to not freak over it)

I have changed-
My perspective on what's important in life and in a person(well okay, not so much, but I just feel like I'm seeing things differently)

I have never felt so free, so independent and so...well, me.
Because I am now on the path to self discovery (who knew there'd be something to discover?) and it holds surprises(sometimes shocks) around every corner. Whatever it is, it's certainly not a boring journey! And when I achieve self-actualization, it's going to be awesome B)
I never thought I'd say this but I'm actually glad I'm single right now and am not in the throes of a violent crush. What most people don't see and what I didn't (or more like ignored) is you can't love someone else if you don't learn to love yourself first. I mean really, give yourself time to figure out what you want to be, what you want to do, who you really are. You owe that much to yourself. Chase your dreams down, the wildest ones.(Or just you know, watch TV and eat popcorn.) Friends, boyfriends will come and go(hopefully not go), but this age, this time in life comes only once and we gotta make the most of it!!

Y'all get my point?

These are pearls of wisdom folks! So don't just say "Pooh, baloney" because this baloney is straight from the heart. You have to experience 'letting go' at least once in your life. Who gives a f*** about what people think?? You shouldn't!!

Dance like there's no tomorrow

Laugh loudly

Sing loudly(and badly)

Hug your friends like you're meeting after 20 years

Be bad sometimes :)

Cuss colorfully when you're pissed

You get the general idea!

Okay, lecture over.
Really

But you see how serious I am?? I mean, this is me! Writing sentimental stuff!!
Yikes, I better post this quick before I delete it.

Next update coming soon, no more corny stuff, I promise;)

Ciao!

Enlightenment

Okay, this is real important.

I had an epiphany last night....

You know how people meditate and do all kinds of stuff to gain true happiness and peace?
I totally found inner peace!
I was lounging on my bed late at night, reading an excellent book and eating chiwda and I was thinking "Damn, this is the life!" and suddenly it struck me that I was totally worry-free, want-free and content.
How cool is that? Who'd have thought that the secret to inner peace lies in the soothing effect of the night air(ok, fine, AC. details, details:P) and in a bowl of potato chiwda(whatever works for you I guess:P).

Man, I'm lucky I love me some me-time. The secret to survival, it is. Try it, y'all. Next time you sit down on that super-comfy couch to watch a good movie or lie down on your bed, listening to the rain fall while reading your favorite book, take a moment to feel great and really soak in that feeling of contentment.
I'm gonna go before I get arrested for the crime of being too corny=/

More Later...

So damn random

I'm sure all of us, at one point or another, have mulled over the extreme complexity of life. When we were little, things were simple, like, dislike(kinda like facebook :P), do, don't do, listen to parents, don't listen, tell the truth, lie and so on. Then the inevitable happens- You grow up. You read stuff, you experience stuff, you meet complex characters, the world isn't black and white anymore. It's like this messy, abstract painting with the random spots of bright color representing happy times with people you love. Gradually, your perspective changes, what seemed horrifying before doesn't seem so bad now. You're old enough to start fighting your childhood fears, you're old enough to hide stuff from your parents without feeling guilty, you're old enough to realise that people are flawed. Life is pretty short and we all want to get it right, because hello, we only live once. Wait, what I'm saying here is that we'll probably never understand the complexity of life, the irony of fate, the selfishness of human beings, why things don't happen when we so badly want them to, why one has to go down to go up(seriously, what is up with that?), whether fate really controls us, whether karma will catch up to us....I mean, who knows?

I think there are hardly any boundaries left these days. Nobody defines any, who even started it? The thing is boundaries, though limiting and prehistoric, make things feel simpler and safer. Remember those days when we had 'best friends' and used to literally declare it? "Oh, she's my best friend". Now we have a bunch of close friends who are probably close friends with another bunch of people, you don't really talk about how close you are. When we were kids, friendships were simple. Now you find yourself wondering, we were so tight, how did we drift apart? Should I call? Maybe they don't want to talk, what would they think? When did things become so complicated?? Even with romance, the more books I read, the more movies I watch, the more convinced I am that there's something we don't know. What if love doesn't exist? What if, in the end, everyone just succumbs to attraction and you know gets married because everyone around them is doing it? And, then they just either have affairs or carry on with life because they're too lazy to change anything? Happiness after all is transient. The happy life people refer to is just a term for peace and satisfaction. You can have that without being truly happy, you know, if there's something you know you're missing out on.
Oh, heck what am I going on about?Noone is going to get this!!I'm reading too many sordid books. I just read one where this girl says yes to a proposal from another guy even though she doesn't love him because he's good and makes her feel safe and crap n then realises she's really in love with her sister's husband whom her sister has just walked out on and probably has been for years! Wait, before the boring guy, she had an affair with a very much married man(to his college sweetheart,no less) and she basically liked the boring guy because he made her feel good. In the end, they get together(duh- ex-husband of sister guy and our heroine), of course,(I don't read books with sad endings) apparently he's loved her for years too. Yeesh. That was just disturbing. And yet one finds oneself rooting for just the kind of character we love to hate in chick-lits and one sees things from her point of view- hell, things are complicated, no black and white, everybody has a side, a reason, and a not-so-insane-sounding explanation. Who am I kidding? Crazy book! Stupid love is so complicated(Not that I have much experience but what I do have is plenty of time for brooding). Some people just chase after it all their lives and some people just don't bother. Maybe the latter are happier, they have no expectations after all.
Life gets complicated when you expect things.

I think I just aged like, 30 years.

In my defense, I did title it the disconnected ramblings.

p.s.- All movie and book ramblings from now on only on my page(tell me a story).

p.p.s. I probably shouldn't publish this but I'll go ahead anyway because that's what a blog is all about.

Good night y'all

An Education

Warning: This post may contain inflammatory statements due to the writer's passionate and er generally 'pissed-off' feelings on the subject.

Everyone raves about the education system in India and how smart Indians are. Personally, I think we need some SERIOUS changes around here. Kids are trained from childhood to compete, get 'good' marks and top. (Do you know that kindergarten fees are skyrocketing to crazy amounts like 1 lac? I also read something about toddlers listening to Beethoven and stuff. ).But, I'm telling you, from what I've seen, the education system is all about only one thing.
MONEY.
People lose their childhood because first they are studying and taking tuitions to top in 10th, then for 12th, then a fancy engineering college(oh yeah, you know which one I'm talking about) or whatever. In fact, as most of us know, the training starts from 8th grade to get into a coaching center after 10th grade which will then train you to get into above-mentioned fancy engineering college. There are so many supposedly 'great' coaching centers around, promising excellent results. They're more like torture chambers. Mental torture, that is.

Assignments.
Unit test.
Some other God-forsaken test.
Some more assignments.
Class tests.
Oh, look! Another test!
How about some fun? Hell, no! Write another test.
Sports? What's that?

Jesus. It's like a nut-farm. They're all obsessed.
Arre sab first aayenge kya??
All these institutes have but one goal. Show better results, and therefore make more money.
They're like factories which want to make zombies out of us. All the same. All toppers.
It's the same in college. They only teach you how to pass exams. Knowledge, who needs it? Read whatever is enough for the exam. What's alarming is I'm starting to think that way too. And that's how I am a 2nd year BTech student with not much knowledge in my subject and not much drive to learn either. Because when learning is all about text books with their unintelligible babble, who's interested? We mug, we remember for 24 hours, write the exam and forget.
I wish we could get a real education. Not the bookish sort, the kind which makes us grow as people, not only in mugging capacity. More of practical stuff, less tests, less pressure, no endless boredom.
I wish I had done so many things I never did. I wish I had not been so obsessed about topping all the time. I wish I had evaluated my options and figured out what I wanted instead of blindly jumping on the IIT bandwagon(which anyway was a huge failure). I wish I had spent more time having fun and going out(not like I studied but still.) I wish people would make more movies like 3 idiots so the next Gen kids don't get enrolled in the robot factories.
I am going to stop now because I am THIS close to quoting 'Give me some sunshine' from 3 idiots.

All I'm saying is, this sucks. We should be able to have fun while we're young. The system needs a HUGE makeover. Degrees right now are meaningless. Everybody gets one. It's not at all hard. The point is what knowledge will we have at the end of this charade? I guess the joke's on me. Study all your life and you're still no closer to being knowledgeable. I should have woken up sooner.

Ah whatever, like I said, it just sucks. Who's going to give me my teenage years back? Supposedly the best time of one's life, mine was spent in a rat race for a piece of cheese which wasn't enough to feed even 1/10th of the rats. From now on, no freaking out much over exams and grades and stuff.
I am SO over it.
*blows a raspberry*

Movies, books, friends, fun, life.

It is time to LIVE!

p.s. I should change the blog name to The disconnected ramblings of a confused, lost, disgruntled, and moody soul. :|

You're beautiful

Beauty...I've often wondered what strange hold it has over us...

What attracts one to somebody? What makes us say they're beautiful?

They say that "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" but how do you define beauty?

Why is it that sometimes we perceive people as beautiful as soon as we clap eyes on them, and sometimes it takes ages of knowing them to feel that way?

And then, that idea suddenly takes hold of the mind and one becomes blind to all else.

Some people have a mysterious charisma. Never understood that, you know.
Some indefinable charm which attracts everyone to them. Some sort of that elusive 'X factor' I guess. All actors have it...the popular ones at least. That's why they have so many crazy fans who idolize them. But then they grow older, and their opposite sex fan-club has no more takers.

The other sort of beauty is the one we perceive when once we know the person.... once we know what their smile means, what the twinkle in the eye indicates, what makes them laugh...

GH said in one of her books, "She realised it wasn't so much the smile that attracted her to Mr. Calverleigh, but the understanding that lay behind the smile"
Now wasn't she wise?? :D

It's true that folks often fall in love with a 'pretty' face, but it's also true that more often than not, they fall out of it too, once the person's personality is revealed.
I've noticed, at least with some movie stars who are extremely good-looking...you know, the works...that once they open their mouth, one feels like going "Shhhhhhhhhh, damn it!". You know?? And one feels an instant repugnance. Alas, the beauty dims. :P

So it's pretty certain that personality plays a big role in attraction or love, if u must.

I guess basically we are all looking for someone akin to us. Someone who understands, you know, really gets us.

And.. er... if you throw in a gorgeous smile and big broad shoulders, no one's gonna complain;)

Whaddya think?

Toodles

Love, actually??

Have any of y'all ever wondered if the 'L' word actually exists?? Of course you have!! Especially us girls ;) eh? It is really is MOST annoying that we grow up reading books and watching movies and then are suddenly catapulted into the real world when we realise that we've been fed a pack of LIES.

I am sure everyone is familiar with the quintessential 'prince charming' who comes in many different packages but is essentially always made of the same stuff. He's nice, he's charming(of course), he's terribly handsome and never fails to fall for the 'princess'. But what they don't tell you is that he probably is a narcissist, handsome in a pretty boy way really and in the real world will probably marry a really bitchy rich female and who suits his consequence more than poor old Cindy.
Then there is the 'tall, dark and handsome' variety who's the brooding sort and holds the female gender in contempt except of course when he meets his 'one true love' and 'reforms his life'. Fiddle!! and Poppycock too!
THEN they feed us with ANOTHER pack of nonsense about a nerdy best-friend guy who apparently has been in love with his girl-best friend since ever he can remember and she doesn't realise it, if you please! She, naturally, lusts after the 'hottest but meanest guy in school' (another stereotype) and only after a lot of drama does she realise that her best-friend is actually kinda hot and she's been in love with him her whole life and not known until now! *rolls eyes* Let me tell you something, if a guy likes a girl, more often than not she can definitely tell and especially if he's supposed to be her best friend so that's rubbish and what's more, being in love your whole life and not knowing is rubbish too ! I mean, how weird is that?? How out of touch with yourself do you have to be to not realise? And the nerdy guy's feet probably stink too :P :D Come on!! He can't be that perfect!

So you see, we've been subsisting on made-up idealistic notions and in the real world it is not at all like that. Boys are no prince charmings. The tall, brooding chaps are probably actually dangerous or... er.. just touched in the head. Lets face it. Boys don't brood. :D I'm not saying girls are perfect, far from it. But I am saying that it's not our fault on account of having grown up on books and movies which turn us into silly, sentimental fools.
I wonder if there is anything such as a perfect relationship. I was watching that pathetic show 'emotional atyachar' out of sheer boredom and the host guy said that 30% of females and 50% of males admit to being more interested in their boy/girlfriend's best friend rather than in their boy/girlfriend :| and he very cheerfully added "So you see, your love may actually be eyeing your best friend". Eeep! The statistics, if true, are rather alarming don't you think?? Almost enough to drive me into becoming a nun!

So does 'true love' and crap really exist?? Or is it just something the mysterious 'they' made up so that people will get married and the human race won't die out? :P
Speaking from observation rather than experience, maybe we should learn not to expect too much from guys, acknowledge our superior sense and pardon them for their lack of it :P . And they should learn to think a little of things other than themselves and not run away from emo-stuff. Don't you think they would get along much better then??

Damn, I should write a book!

:D:D

More later,
Toodles
